I love the idea of an autumn fresh start. That new shoes, back to school, feeling. This year that back to school feeling is deep in my mind. There is a true part of me feeling like I am about to start school in a new town hoping that I fit in and make friends in that nervous teenage way, but graciously I have the confidence of someone who has outgrown the teenage years and have a bit more practice going to new places and meeting new people.
A funny thing about back to school and settling into new places in general is how for me at least it makes me want new things! It doesn't quite help that my birthday is right at back to school time, so I made the deep connection of this time of year and gift receiving. Back to school is also a good time for list making. I have made quite a few lists thinking about the next month or two as I leave the west coast, settle into my new mid coast town, and make our new rental home. One of the lists I have made is hobbies or practices I hope to dig into through fall and winter. I plan to make a serious effort in my sewing and knitting practice as since I learned them as a child I have made middling efforts to continue and I have big hopes for this year. I also am feeling the butterflies of excitement about learning about entirely new wild plants and creatures and mushrooms.
As well as lists about practices I have wish lists. Those lists include beautiful lime green garden clogs, a fancy milk frother for plenty of home cafe au laits, a “fruit only” cutting board inspired by the ever wonderful Fanny Singer who has sold me on the mindset of having a “fruit only” cutting board so you never have to taste an apple slice tinged with garlic or onion again, or this other cutting board that would also superbly fill the “fruit only” role, these towels recommended by the Zinzi’s Treehouse substack, or these way fancy ones with horses, or this fitting fish towel, or these sold out ones.
I’m also planning on picking up this coffee maker in butter yellow and hoping to pickup this cookbook because of the inspiration from Home Cooking Diary, this one as takeout will be a bit sparse and I want to try new recipes out of my norm, and this one because it has been on my list since it was published and I’m excited to finally dive in. Lastly, I’m already dreaming about holiday parties because of these cocktail picks .
Along with all these possible things to buy I’m excited thinking about unpacking all my things that have been lovingly and carefully packed into a storage pod and to get cooking!
Planning on recreated this breakfast from Sweedeedee
I am also eager to dive back into Natasha Pickowicz’s More than Cake and make all the recipes but especially this one.
And one day getting a Ginny Sims bowl so I can copy and paste this meal and bowl into my kitchen
Daydreaming about my wish list and meals I want to make has been such a joy as the excitement builds for getting to Maine. I’ve been thinking about Maine and then visiting Maine and now moving to Maine for years now and it’s finally just a few short weeks away. Send all your best moving wishes our way!
